Robert Dollar

Grand Old Man of the Pacific

Robert (Captain) Dollar is a perfect example of Christian dominon. Born to a poor family in 1844, he went to work at the age of 14 in a lumber camp as cooks helper. He taught himself to speak French and do the camps accounting, and by the age of 22 he was in charge of the camp. He then purchased a lumber camp of his own. His first enterprise was unsuccessful, but he persevered, increasing his business and finally entering the shipping industry, becoming one of the wealthiest men in America.

As a Protestant, he tythed regularly, and finally created his own orphanages for boys. These boys came to be known as Captain Dollar Boys, and were proud of that title. they were given a Christian education, many boys raised by a single christian couple, and when they came of age they were brought to Captain Dollar, who give them a silver dollar and sent them on their way. It was a point of pride that not a single one of these boys went astray, and many of them became great men in their own right.
